  17. <p>    The gesture seemed nice: Stanford University would return
  18. some 550 ancient remains to the Ohlone Indians. "Indian beliefs
  19. hold ancestral remains to be sacred," wrote Stanford provost
  20. James Rosse. The result, though, was one nasty academic fight.
  21. Bert Gerow, an emeritus professor of anthropology at Stanford
  22. and curator of the remains for about 40 years, immediately
  23. announced he was the owner of most of them. Thereupon the
  24. chairman of Stanford's anthropology department, James Lowell
  25. Gibbs Jr., had the locks changed on the collection. The wrangle
  26. grew wider as scientists contemplated the loss of the bones,
  27. some up to 3,000 years old, which have long been available for
  28. study. Clement Meighan, head of the American Committee for the
  29. Preservation of Archaeological Collections, weighed in: "We are
  30. not talking about somebody's uncle. Some of these people were
  31. buried in the time of the Greeks and the Romans. Destruction of
  32. their remains is really unconscionable." Will the Indians ever
  33. bury those bones? Will academe ever bury the hatchet? Stay
